Boavista Golf Course Lagos, Algarve
Boavista is UK architect Howard Swan's 2002 design for Lagos, built with the aim of looking as though it had always been part of the land. It runs in two sections: a Resort stretch (1st to 3rd, 13th to 18th) and a Country stretch between (4th to 12th), climbing from sub-tropical planting near the clubhouse to sweeping views over the Bay of Lagos and the Serra de Monchique.
It's a par-71 of around 6,150 metres. The outward nine rises to a high 9th tee; the inward nine drops into a valley of lakes and bridges. The 6th, the Cliff Hole, plays across a natural ravine, and the 7th, generally reckoned the signature hole, offers the course's best view of the Atlantic and the Monchique hills. Water returns in earnest at the 14th, a long hole nicknamed the Lake, and the round closes at a small replica of St Andrews' Swilken Bridge. Wind is a constant factor throughout.
The buggy is close to essential here given the terrain, and the resort adds a driving range, academy, clubhouse restaurant and snack bar, and pro shop, though there's no locker room on site. Book a round at the course built to feel like it was never built at all. (...)
Palmares Golf Course Lagos, Algarve
Palmares Golf Course climbs the hillside above the Bay of Lagos, on the Algarve's western coast, with Meia Praia beach and the Atlantic below. Frank Pennink laid out the original course in 1975. Robert Trent Jones Jr. reworked it in 2010, and it's since been ranked 26th in Golf World's Top 100 in Europe. That pedigree, matched with the setting, makes Palmares one to build a trip around.
Twenty-seven holes split into three nine-hole loops, Alvor, Lagos and Praia, playable in any order. Alvor climbs through pine-lined parkland with real elevation change. Lagos folds two lakes into its par three third and its par five sixth. Praia turns properly links, running through dune country with the Atlantic wind doing most of the defending. The 14th carries the course's signature hole status, and no two rounds at Palmares play quite the same.
The clubhouse looks out over the Alvor Estuary and the bay, with a restaurant, pro shop, locker rooms and a resident academy on site. Buggies are worth booking, given the terrain. Espiche Golf Course Lagos, Algarve
Espiche is South African architect Peter Sauerman's design, opened in 2012 in a protected nature reserve five minutes from Lagos, in the western Algarve. The front nine runs out past the village of Espiche; the back nine climbs into the hills behind it, through olive, fig and almond trees, with the Serra de Monchique on the horizon.
It's a par-72 of just under 5,900 metres, built to follow the land's natural contours rather than reshape them. Expect rolling, undulating ground, a few blind tee shots, tight landing areas and large, undulating greens that reward touch over power. Water shows up on two or three holes, and dense native scrub lines the fairways throughout, so accuracy off the tee matters more than distance.
The clubhouse, designed separately by architect Nadine Berger and built on the ruins of an old farmhouse, with the original stone worked into its lower walls, opened in 2014 and took third place in Golf Inc. Magazine's Worldwide Clubhouse of the Year the following year, the first club outside the United States to be recognised in the category.
